FREE Printable - Beginning Letter Sounds and Recognition - Letters A-B

When teaching children how to read, one of the crucial steps is to make sure they understand the concept of beginning letter sounds. Once they matter this, they aren't far from reading. I believe the hardest part of reading is understanding that letters make sounds, when they come together, they make words, and that's how we get meaningful words, sentences, and stories. After learning the alphabet, learning beginning letters of words makes it easier for children to start reading. It is often difficult for some children to grasp this concept, but once they do, everything starts falling into places.

I have some free beginning letters activity printables available on this blog, but this one (Beginning Letter Sounds and Recognition) is a little different. This activity book has three parts to it. One is where images are displayed and students point to the ones that start with the given letter of the page, the second part is where students draw an image that starts with the letter, and the third part is where they trace the letter. This activity is simple and yet packed with multiple beneficial features.

Benefits of this activity:
  1. Helps children master their alphabet letters
  2. Helps with learning the beginning sounds of words
  3. Helps strengthen children's fine motor skills (i.e. holding pen/pencil)
  4. Helps children improve in art (i.e. drawing, imagination)
  5. Helps children improve in writing

My First Alphabet Game Book + Free Printable - Ihsaan Home Academy

Whether your child is a preschooler or kindergartener, it's always fun to learn phonics while playing a game. Learning the alphabet is one of the first official learning materials children get exposed to when starting school or homeschool. Making it fun and interactive not only makes the learning process easy, it also pushes children to want to learn more. This is the reason why I put this alphabet booklet together.

My First Alphabet Game Book is a book with letters, short stories, and rhyming words from A to Z. Each page has a star at the top right corner for coloring, once the child knows the letter.

As you read the book to your child, you can play the game by putting some alphabet letters in a container and asking your child to give you the correct letter as you read it.
Example:
"Give me a 'B.'"
Once the child gives you the letter, you say, "What does 'B' say?"
Then you continue reading the page.
You can also put the letter on each image and say for example, "'B' is for Ball, 'B' is for Bed, etc"

An additional great thing about this book is that each page has a Muslim kid holding the letter. The kids have different clothes and skin color to show diversity.

More info about the book:
- A4 Booklet format (A5 for each page)
- Print on both pages
- Laminate each page for a better duration and to reuse it
- Use a hole puncher to put holes on the corner of the laminated pages
- Connect the pages with binding rings

Price: £3.99

Now, here's the free printable I would like to share with you. It's the first page of the Alphabet Game Book (A4 page). If you would like to get all the pages, you can purchase the book from my store.

Free Beginning Letter Sound Activities

It's important for early readers or learners to understand the concept of beginning letter sounds. It makes reading not only earlier, but also more fluent. The best way to do this is by first introducing the alphabet phonetically. So instead of your child learning the letter 'A' as we know it, teach him/her the sound of the letter; 'aa'.
Example: 'aa'pple (apple)

Once the child learns and recognises letter sounds, it would make it much easier to also recognise the beginning letter of words. As a result, spelling and decoding words becomes earlier for the child inShaa Allah.
Below is the printable for three beginning letter sound activities that you can use with your child once he/she has mastered the phonetic alphabet.
Print the activities on A4 sheets, and laminate them for duration. You may also use sheet protectors instead. Play by using lowercase wooden or plastic alphabet letters, and using a dry erase marker.
I hope this would benefit you and your child inShaa Allah.
